Lamplighter of Orrel
Sworn to Orrel, she has kept a light for the lost for thirteen years. On a night of storm in the year 296, she runs through the forest of Yldra with a baby bound to her chest and the lanterns of the Ivorne closing in. She has one word left to keep, and a few minutes at the shrine to keep it.
The Renegade Inquisitor
An inquisitor of the Ivorne who turned against his own order to protect Aemira and her child on their flight through the forest of Yldra. Quiet, exact and tired, he says less than he knows and nothing he does not mean. While she reaches the shrine deep in the cave of Orrel, he holds the tunnel alone.

Elder of Vellin
Keeper of the anchorstone of Vellin: eighty-one, sharp-tongued, armed with a pipe of dried lavender and a stick she mostly uses for pointing. She raised Galen, calls the avatar "trouble", and has kept her own oath for sixty-five years: "I will keep this village standing."
Shopkeeper of Vellin
Keeper of Vellin's general store: round, cheerful and never silent. A former canal trader from Saveno who came to the valley twenty years ago "for the quiet", he prices everything in Lume, compliments included. When the village starts whispering about the avatar, he is the one who slips them a lantern wick, free of charge.
Ferryman of Vellin
Runa's father, a tall, silent man who says in four words what his daughter says in forty. He has crossed the river Seln every day of his life, in any weather. On the night Runa leaves, he does not say goodbye: he leans her mother's ferry pole against the door, where she will find it.
Hunter of Yldra
A hunter who has lived by himself in the forest of Yldra for twenty years. Twelve years ago he followed a stag into the cave of Orrel and came back alone, with one eye. Gruff, superstitious and decent, he hands out warnings rather than blessings, and roast rabbit to anyone who listens.
